Class Cover and The Casual Teacher Network

An exciting new discovery by Teacher Brain is *Class Cover!*

This is an online booking system for casual teachers. Schools upload their
list of preferred casual teachers and can add new ones who apply to work at
their school.

To book teachers, they log in and enter how many casual or relief teachers
they require, and the clever system finds the casuals! Schools can
prioritise who they want called/sms-ed and can also search the system for
new casuals in the local area.

It saves schools (and the poor teacher in charge of making the early morning phone calls!) so much time and stress. Class Cover can be working while you drive to school and it offers a free trial!

There are over 400 primary, high and Catholic schools currently using Class Cover.

Casual teachers can create FREE online profiles with their information and qualifications so they can be matched to local schools.

To create a free profile or school trial, click here!

They can then upgrade to The Casual Teacher Network. This upgrade is where a small annual fee is paid and it offers discounts to and notifies of MANY Professional Learning Opportunities (that normally don’t come about when relief teachers are not attached to a school and is vital for maintaining Accreditation). There are also discounts to many different educational businesses. The annual fee pays for itself in the numerous offers available!

We loved the idea so much, we asked to be part of this wonderful initiative, and are happy to offer 20% off Teacher Brain memberships to anyone who has joined The Casual Teacher Network.

Introduction Of The Australian Curriculum

Teacher Brain resources can easily be used and adapted for the implementation of the new Australian Curriculum.

For English, we have many resources that link with different forms of print (eg: visual literacy), how language can be used, and how sounds can be manipulated.

For Maths, we have updated a few of our resources, eg: the 3D Shape Properties grid now contains a column for curved surfaces (changed from just faces). Our resources also allow for opportunities to partition different numbers instead of just Friends of 10, and allows for quality mathematical thinking.

Our resources also cater for Best Start. We have many games and activities for Concepts about Print, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, etc.

Teachers who follow the Language, Literacy and Learning (L3) program also use our resources as they need so many small, independent tasks for their groups.

We have incorporated the Super 6 Comprehension strategies into our resources. You can find downloads for visualising, predicting, questioning and making connections.

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED!

Behaviour Management

Behaviour management is a tricky one in the classroom. What works for one child, amy not work for another.

Unfortunately a lot of teaching time often gets switched to behavior management when there is a difficult child in the class.

We have made a few different monitoring systems for our website, the most popular being a large peg chart system where students move their pegs up or down, depending on the behaviours they are displaying.

One has children trying to stay in the ‘Cool Zone’ for the whole day, only moving their peg for consequences. The other has children being able to move their pegs if they have displayed positive behaviours. Both also come as individualised mini charts for desk use.

Sight Words!

I know we’ve posted about the importance of sight words before, but now we have a full sight word program ready to download and print out!

It has flash cards, home programs, assessments, bingo, games, worksheets, displays, ideas and IWB resources for each grade.

We’ve made up our own lists, but they contain the first 30 sight words and are similar to the magic 100. The words are the most commonly found words in texts, as well as some important nouns that students will come across and need for their writing.

Susan Burke Interactive Lessons

There is a big demand for ICT skills and integration these days. It is rare to find a classroom without an IWB (or equivalent).

Susan Burke has found the hole in this market and has launched her website with ready-made lessons for Interactive White Boards!

They are fun and engaging and provide activities, clips, graphics, games and quizzes on a range of different topics. You can even email and request a theme and she will make it for you very quickly.

Susan has uploaded many samples of free IWB lessons on her website: http://interactivelessons.com.au/free-lessons/

Freebies

When showing Teacher Brain to some university students and asking them to make suggestions on what they’d like to see on the site, they requested freebies!

So, we give the people what they want! We set up a freebie section!!

It gives a sample of all different Teacher Brain resources – Literacy Stations, Maths Centers, Board games, Posters, and templates.

Just Dance!

Our good friend told us about ‘Just Dance’ on Youtube and we have been having SO much fun with it!
Load the video and watch with delight as your students groove away!

We use it as a brain break, or after our students have been sitting at a long assembly.
It can also be used for sport on a rainy day, or as a reward.

Some dances do require you to put students into rows (like they are line dancing). If there is more than one character on the screen, you can assign parts to the students, so they are following the different people.
If you have a kindergarten class, this is a must! It is hilarious and so darn cute, all at the same time!

Do be careful, and watch the videos you plan on playing at home first – you may not like the lyrics (Think Gangnam Style’s ‘sexy ladies’), and some are a bit dull with the music or dance moves.
Our favourites are:
One Direction – What Makes You Beautiful
Who Let The Dogs Out?
Under The Sea
Cotton Eye Joe
Wild, Wild West
Gummy Bear Song
I like To Move It

(Try searching ‘Just Dance Kids’ on Youtube too)

Enjoy, and you are welcome for the tip!

Click N Colour

We love the Art Outline colouring pages, but it seems EVERY school has them, and whenever there is some free time, or a class split, students do the same pictures over and over! You know the ones – the Aboriginal animals, or dinosaurs, or butterflies with all the little spaces to colour.

We’ve found a new site with trendy, fun, intricate designs: ClickNColour by Debbie Neale.

There are hearts, stars, swirls, peace signs, etc! A lot more exciting, if you ask us!

Our absolute favourite is the pattern alphabet. Once downloaded, you can change the size of the letters, and make display signs, tote tray labels, or even personalised colouring sheets.

It is called ClickNColour because you can also decorate the pictures and letters using the Paint program on your computer. Debbie has a tutorial on her website to show you how (it is super easy!)

She hasĀ given us an Australian Flag colouring sheet for our freebie section!

Spot It Educational Card Game

Have you played Spot It?!
It is our all-time favourite game!
You grab 2 cards and work out what picture is the same on both.

It will seriously blow your mind trying to come up with how there is a matching picture on any 2 cards that you grab, doesn’t matter the order!
It’s about $18 to buy (we even play it with our adult friends)… and now they’ve just released an education series with letters, numbers or sight words!

“The circular cards feature illustrations, numbers, letters and sight words, and
there is always one-and only one-matching symbol between any two cards. Players
search for the match and spot it to win, while building letter, number and shape
recognition and reading comprehension.
